Der Ingenieur Andr\u00e9 Waterkeyn hatte das Atomium als Symbol f\u00fcr das Atomzeitalter und die friedliche Nutzung der Kernenergie entworfen; errichtet wurde es unter Leitung der Architekten Andr\u00e9 und Jean Polak. Es ist insgesamt 102m hoch. Das Geb\u00e4ude besteht aus neun Kugeln von jeweils 18 Metern Durchmesser, von denen sechs begehbar sind. Durch einige von ihnen f\u00fchren Rolltreppen, die mit bis zu 35 m L\u00e4nge bei ihrem Bau einst zu den l\u00e4ngsten in Europa z\u00e4hlten. <br><br>Dieses Totem im Br\u00fcsseler Himmel, das weder ein Turm, noch eine Pyramide ist, etwas kubisch, etwas sph\u00e4risch, auf halbem Weg zwischen Skulptur und Architektur, \u00dcberbleibsel der Vergangenheit mit resolut futurischem Aussehen, Museum und Ausstellungshaus \u2013 das Atomium ist zugleich ein Gegenstand, ein Raum, eine Utopie und ein einzigartiges Emblem, das jeder Klassifizierung entbehrt. Seit der brillanten Renovierung (2006) ist das bekannteste der belgischen Denkm\u00e4ler auch ein Museum mit st\u00e4ndigen Ausstellungen und Sonderausstellungen
