Het is ontworpen door ingenieur Andr\u00e9 Waterkeyn en de architecten Andr\u00e9 en Jean Polak en is 102 meter hoog. De negen roestvrijstalen bollen met een diameter van 18 m (60 ft) zijn zodanig met elkaar verbonden dat het geheel de vorm heeft van een eenheidscel van een ijzerkristal dat 165 miljard keer is vergroot. <br><br>Een totem in de Brusselse skyline. Noch NL toren, noch piramide. Halverwege tussen beeldhouwkunst en architectuur. Een overblijfsel uit het verleden met een vastberaden futuristisch uiterlijk. Het Atomium is het enige symbool van zijn soort in de wereld. Het symboliseerde de democratische wil om de vrede tussen alle naties te bewaren, het geloof in de vooruitgang, zowel technisch als wetenschappelijk, en tenslotte een optimistische visie op de toekomst van een moderne, nieuwe, super-technologische wereld voor een beter leven voor de mensheid.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"elementor-repeater-item-99c7ccd swiper-slide\" role=\"group\" aria-roledescription=\"slide\"><div class=\"swiper-slide-bg\"><\/div><div class=\"swiper-slide-inner\" ><div class=\"swiper-slide-contents\"><div class=\"elementor-slide-heading\">Maten<\/div><div class=\"elementor-slide-description\"><p>Het vreedzaam gebruik van atoomenergie voor wetenschappelijke doeleinden belichaamde deze thema's bijzonder goed en dat is dan ook wat de vorm van het bouwwerk heeft bepaald. Met zijn hoogte van 102 meter en zijn negen onderling verbonden bollen stelt hij een elementair ijzerkristal voor dat 165 miljard (miljard) keer is vergroot. Het werd bedacht door de ingenieur Andr\u00e9 Waterkeyn (1917-2005). De bollen werden echter ingericht door de architecten Andr\u00e9 en Jean Polak.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"elementor-repeater-item-165c62c swiper-slide\" role=\"group\" aria-roledescription=\"slide\"><div class=\"swiper-slide-bg\"><\/div><div class=\"swiper-slide-inner\" ><div class=\"swiper-slide-contents\"><div class=\"elementor-slide-heading\">Wereldtentoonstelling 1958<\/div><div class=\"elementor-slide-description\"><p>Het was niet de bedoeling dat het Atomium na de wereldtentoonstelling van 1958 zou blijven bestaan, maar door zijn populariteit en succes werd het al snel een belangrijk ori\u00ebntatiepunt, eerst in Brussel en vervolgens op internationaal niveau. Een halve eeuw later belichaamt het Atomium overigens nog steeds die idee\u00ebn over de toekomst en universaliteit. En zij zet, onder meer via haar culturele programmering, het in 1958 aangevangen debat voort: Wat voor toekomst willen we voor morgen? Het Atomium beeldt negen ijzeratomen af in de vorm van de kubusvormige eenheidscel van een ijzerkristal, 165 miljard keer vergroot. Hoewel het Atomium een ijzeren eenheidscel voorstelt, waren de kogels oorspronkelijk bekleed met aluminium.
